Engineers and scientists are a crucial component of the competitiveness and performance of the country. You will have the opportunity to develop a good knowledge of engineering and the career opportunities it offers. Through work experience, practical tasks and project work you will develop skills to help you progress in the sector.

Required qualifications

Five or more A*-C grades at GCSE including English language and mathematics. Students can also progress to the course from the higher diploma.

What will I study?

This diploma will introduce the key themes of engineering giving you an understanding of basic engineering principles.

The course will focus on:

  • the importance of engineering in the modern world and how it impacts of the way we live our lives
  • engineering technology: design, materials, electronics systems, maintenance and manufacturing
  • how new materials contribute to design and how to develop and launch new ideas
  • numeracy, communication and ICT skills
  • projects on topics such as ‘What part could engineering play in reducing energy bills?’

On the course you will:

  • complete a project on a subject of your choice, such as designing a car powered by solar energy
  • benefit from work experience in the field of engineering
  • have the opportunity to be mentored by professionals
  • have the opportunity to combine the diploma with an A-level or vocational course.

Method of assessment

Assessment will be through a combination of assignments, projects and examinations.

What will I be able to progress to?

After completing the advanced diploma you will be able to progress to university, further training or employment. This could be in the field of engineering or you could apply the transferable skills you will have gained to study or work in a different sector.
