Level 3 vocational courses
(eg level 3 BTEC extended
diplomas)
These courses are ideal if you are likely to achieve at least four A*-C grades at GCSE, prefer coursework to examinations and are interested in a particular subject and career path.
Vocational courses enable you to focus on the subject area you are most interested in. You will learn in a hands-on way by putting into practice the knowledge you gain. Depending on your GCSE results you may be able to study an AS-level or BTEC certificate/subsidiary diploma alongside your vocational course. Equivalent to three A-levels, on successful completion of the course, you will be able to progress to university to continue your studies or you may decide to enter employment.
Where will these qualifications take me
Level 3 vocational courses, often level 3 BTEC extended diplomas, enable you to focus on a subject or vocation you enjoy and would like to work in one day. To study a level 3 vocational course you will need to achieve four or more A*–C grades at GCSE including a grade D in mathematics or English language. Alternatively, you may have a full level two pass in a related subject plus two GCSEs at grade C or above. Depending on your GCSE grades, you may also take an AS/A-level alongside the extended diploma. Level 3 vocational courses are hands-on and are equivalent to three A-levels unless stated otherwise. They will prepare you for further study at university or for employment.
