Art
A-level
One-year AS/two-year A-level
Explore your creativity through drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking. You will discover how art has influenced history and continues to contribute to today’s society. In the second year you will have the opportunity to specialise in a specific medium and look at themes, ideas and issues in more depth.
Required qualifications
Five or more A*-C grades at GCSE including English language. You will also be required to bring a portfolio of art and design work to your interview.
What will I study?
The course will focus on:
- the history of art
- painting and drawing
- printmaking and sculpture
- practical, theoretical and analytical research.
On the course you will:
- create your own artwork
- visit galleries, enter art exhibitions and competitions
- work with professional artists on live projects
- work with students in other subjects including design for performing arts
- organise an exhibition of your own work.
Method of assessment
You will be continually assessed during tutorials, coursework, an externally set paper, preparatory supporting work and critical/historical studies.
What will I be able to progress to?
You can study for a relevant degree or higher national diploma in art and design. Former students have gained places at Central Saint Martins, Wimbledon School of Art, Chelsea College of Art and Design and Ravensbourne. Rachel Worth (ex-Plashet School) studied this subject as one of her A-levels and achieved a grade B. She is now studying an art foundation course at Central St Martins.
Other information
You will need to purchase your own art materials, some of which are available to buy from the college. You will need to add fine art-specific materials to this basic kit as you progress through the course. Research trips will require a small financial contribution.
