Are you fascinated by chemical reactions? Do you want to explore the world of atoms and molecules? If so, then chemistry will really suit you. This subject is vital if you want to pursue a career in medicine, pharmacy or forensic science. It will also help to develop your problem-solving and research skills which will be invaluable in higher education.
Required qualifications
Five or more A*-C grades at GCSE including English language, mathematics and a minimum of a grade B for science.
What will I study?
The course will focus on:
- foundations of chemistry
- applications of chemistry
- organic chemistry
- rates of reaction and chemical energetics.
On the course you will:
- complete an assignment that links GCSE and AS-level to ensure you have the basic understanding you need
- develop your skills by doing practical lab work
- attend lectures and conferences.
Method of assessment
Each unit is assessed separately by an examination. Your practical skills will also be assessed through coursework and practical examinations.
What will I be able to progress to?
Studying chemistry will provide you with an important foundation for science-based degree courses and careers. It will also equip you with transferable skills which will enable you to progress to other subjects. Nida-B Ahmed (ex-Kingsford Community School) studied this subject as one of her A-levels and achieved a grade A. She is now studying medicine at King’s College London.
If you wish to study medicine, dentistry, optometry, physiotherapy or other medically-related degrees at university you will need a good grade at A-level chemistry. We also offer a specialist pathway course for students keen to pursue medicine and other similar subjects.
