One-year AS/two-year A-level
If you are passionate about dance you will love this subject. You will learn various techniques focusing on ballet and contemporary dance but you will also explore other styles. You will choreograph and perform your own work to external audiences at the college’s arts venue, Stratford Circus. In the past students have also performed at high profile venues including the Royal Festival Hall.
Required qualifications
Five or more A*-C grades at GCSE including English language. You will need an interest in developing your knowledge of practical skills and theory through dance.
What will I study?
The course will focus on:
- your dance technique and performance skills
- knowledge and understanding of choreography
- healthy dancer – anatomy and physiology
- critical analysis of your skills through written work
- study of professional works.
On the course you will:
- create choreography in relation to the practitioners you have studied
- work with visiting professional artists
- take part in college productions and community performances
- study recognised choreographers through watching films and visits to live performances
- produce written work focusing on event planning, dance skills and employment opportunities.
Method of assessment
You will be assessed by ongoing coursework which will be 60% written work and 40% practical work.
What will I be able to progress to?
You will gain the experience to study dance at degree level at dance conservatoires and universities. This subject will also provide you with a solid foundation of critical and analytical skills which will complement studies in humanities and media.

*Please note, the formal qualification will be A-level performing arts and you will focus your studies on dance.
