Economics

A-level
One-year AS/two-year A-level

Are you fascinated by money, how we make it and how we spend it? Are you curious about trade? Are you interested in Britain’s development and role in a global economy? If so, you will enjoy this subject.

Required qualifications

You will need to average B grades at GCSE and achieve at least a grade C for GCSE mathematics and English language. Economics is a challenging A-level which you are strongly advised to research before choosing as one of your subject options. You need to be confident in your numerical skills and demonstrate strong academic ability.

What will I study?

The course will focus on:

  • competitive markets – how they work and why they fail
  • how economies are managed
  • business economics and economic efficiency
  • global economy and international trade.

On the course you will:

  • develop projects
  • make presentations
  • discuss current events.

Method of assessment

You will be assessed through four examinations consisting of unseen data questions, multiple choice questions and structured essays.

What will I be able to progress to?

You will have access to a wide range of higher education opportunities and careers. These include politics, law, banking, insurance, business, accountancy, journalism, the civil service and public administration.

Other information

We discourage students from combining business studies and economics (because of their overlap), except as part of a five AS-level programme.

More

We also offer specialist pathways in financial services and economics for ambitious students confident that they would like to pursue further study and careers in these areas.
