One-year AS/two-year A-level
This programme allows you to study a combination of varied texts from both a literary and language perspective. You will develop your written skills and learn to adapt your individual writing for different audiences, purposes and contexts.
Required qualifications
Five or more A*–C grades at GCSE including English language.
What will I study?
The course will focus on:
- writing for different audiences and purposes
- studying literary and non-literary texts
- how to apply linguistic and literary concepts to literary texts
- the differences between speech and writing
- the representation of regional dialect in written texts.
On the course you will:
- write using English appropriately and accurately
- analyse how meanings and effects are created and conveyed in written texts from diverse genres
- analyse non-fiction texts
- discuss short transcripts of conversation
- read and discuss literary and non-literary texts.
Method of assessment
Coursework is an essential component of this course at both AS and A2-level. You will need to read widely to engage effectively with the coursework tasks. Each year you will sit one examination and submit one folder of coursework.
What will I be able to progress to?
The written and analytical skills gained through the study of English language and literature are invaluable for further study at higher education level, in addition to future careers in business, law, media or education.
