One-year AS/two-year A-level

From Shakespeare plays to contemporary novels of the last decade, you will explore English literature from a range of cultures and the connections between them. You will look at fiction, non-fiction, drama and poetry and investigate the cultural and historical influences on readers and writers.

Required qualifications

Five or more A*–C grades at GCSE including English language.

What will I study?

The course will focus on:

  • novels, poetry and plays
  • established classics and new writing
  • major themes including jealousy, ambition, loyalty and the need for independence
  • critical appreciation of chosen texts.

On the course you will:

  • develop your reading and writing skills
  • enrich your learning experience by visiting the theatre and other relevant venues
  • enhance your analytical and communication skills.

Method of assessment

You will be assessed by examinations and coursework during both years of the A-level course.

What will I be able to progress to?

The writing, analytical and communication skills you gain in English literature will be valuable in many higher education courses and careers, such as journalism, media, education and business.
