If you love films and want to develop your understanding and appreciation of them, this is the course for you. In the first year you will focus on how films create meaning and how audiences understand them. You will also get the opportunity to carry out case studies on various Hollywood stars, directors and genres and produce a practical piece of film based on your studies.

Required qualifications

Five or more A*-C grades at GCSE including English language.

What will I study?

The course will focus on:

  • the process of film-making from finance to production and marketing
  • creating meaning through camera work, editing, music and lighting
  • the film industry such as Hollywood and British cinema
  • history of film
  • world cinema including Bollywood films.

On the course you will:

  • carry out case studies on film-making, campaigns and fan websites
  • write your own scripts for films
  • make a piece of film
  • watch and analyse films
  • carry out research on your favourite star or director.

Method of assessment

This subject is assessed by examinations and coursework, including a short practical project.

What will I be able to progress to?

This subject can lead to a wide range of degree programmes in film studies, media studies, scriptwriting, film and television production or any other humanities-based degree. Caltha Stevenson-Hanns (ex-Stratford School) studied this subject as one of her A-levels and achieved a grade A. She is now studying film studies at Kingston University London.
