Graphic design

A-level
One-year AS/two-year A-level

Graphic design is driven by innovation, rapid developments in technology and highly creative minds. Magazines, CD covers and advertisements are just a few examples of graphic design that we encounter each day. Through ‘live’ projects with our business links you will gain an insight into the main graphic design industries. Drawing as a communication tool is a key part of the course.

Required qualifications

Five or more A*–C grades at GCSE including an art-related subject and English language. At your interview you will be required to show a portfolio of art or design work to demonstrate your ability in graphic design.

What will I study?

The course will focus on:

  • drawing as a way to communicate ideas clearly and directly
  • design development
  • graphics in advertising
  • developing techniques using software such as Photoshop and Illustrator
  • multi-media applications and exploration of type and letter forms.

On the course you will:

  • develop a professional portfolio
  • attend seminars run by practising designers and visit design galleries
  • take your turn running the in-house NewVIc graphic design studio
  • explore graphic design ideas through sketching, drawing, photography and stencilling
  • combine handcraft methods with computer manipulation.

Method of assessment

For both the first and second year of your study there is one internally set unit and one external examination, totalling four units.

What will I be able to progress to?

A-level graphic design will prepare you to progress to a one-year art foundation course or other relevant degree. Possible careers in graphic design include working for the media, an advertising company or a design agency.

Other information

You will need to pay for your own art and graphic design-specific materials, some of which are available to buy from the college. Research trips will require a small financial contribution
