One-year AS/two-year A-level

You will learn how media affects the way we view the world and how technology has allowed the media industry to become so powerful. You will learn how to understand film, television, print images, advertising and documentaries, how films and TV programmes are structured, how audiences are targeted and the way that different groups are represented in the media.

Required qualifications

Five or more A*-C grades at GCSE including English language.

What will I study?

The course will focus on:

  • how we understand the media
  • advertising and film fiction
  • practical production
  • how people are portrayed in the media
  • different types of media such as horror films.

On the course you will:

  • make your own film, video or web design
  • learn to use the latest software and media technology
  • analyse films and newspapers
  • use the internet to support and extend your work.

Method of assessment

You will be assessed through practical work, coursework and examinations.

What will I be able to progress to?

You can go on to university to study for a degree in media, cultural studies, film and TV, advertising or a wide range of degree programmes related to media studies. Adeleke Apena (ex-Kingsford Community School) studied this subject as one of this A-levels and achieved a grade A. He is now studying media studies and English language at the University of Brighton.
