If you are serious about performing, composing, researching and listening to a wide range of music then this course is for you. You will be challenged and developed as a musician, increasing your understanding and enjoyment of music.

Required qualifications

Five or more A*-C grades at GCSE including English language. You will need to play an instrument or sing to at least grade four standard or have grade C or above in GCSE music. Alternatively, you may have passed grade five theory and have a good knowledge of music notation. You will need to supply evidence of creative work at interview.

What will I study?

The course will focus on:

  • performing on your main instrument or with your voice
  • writing music using compositional techniques
  • harmony and music arranging for performances
  • the development of musical styles.

On the course you will:

  • perform regularly
  • have additional music instrumentation lessons through the NewVIc music bursary
  • create your own compositions
  • develop your aural and analysis skills.

Method of assessment

You will be assessed through a mixture of coursework, written examinations and timed practical tasks.

What will I be able to progress to?

This is an ideal subject if you wish to study music at university or at a music college. Music successfully complements other A-levels through the variety and range of skills involved in the subject.
