One-year AS/two-year A-level

For centuries, human beings have been absorbed with questions about the nature of the universe and their place within it. Philosophy will enable you to develop the critical skills to deal with these questions and help you to begin finding some answers. It will also introduce you to some of the most interesting and important ideas in history.
Required qualifications
Five or more A*-C grades at GCSE including English language.
What will I study?
The course will focus on:
- understanding key philosophical ideas and thinkers
- exploring ideas about God and the nature of existence
- looking at the meaning and purpose of human life
- examining the basis of human knowledge
- exploring ideas of personal identity
- theory of knowledge.
On the course you will:
- develop your thinking skills
- participate in arguments, debates and discussions
- explore key ideas in terms of film and literature
- present your ideas and arguments in essays.
Method of assessment
Assessment is by examination. You will take two units at AS-level and two further units in the second year.
What will I be able to progress to?
Philosophy is an excellent subject if you plan to study humanities, social sciences, media and law at university. As the subject deals with logical thinking and analytical reasoning, many prestigious universities value A-level philosophy for the skill and insight that it can give to students.
