One-year AS/two-year A-level
If you are interested in the way people interact in different circumstances then you will enjoy sociology. This subject will allow you to explore human social behaviour in the major areas of life in modern societies. You will develop your debating skills, learn how to gather and assess information and how to present a conclusion.
Required qualifications
Five or more A*-C grades at GCSE including English language.
What will I study?
The course will focus on:
- contemporary social changes
- why some groups are more powerful than others
- the sociology of education, deviance and power
- societies – are they in conflict or in orderly balance?
On the course you will:
- take part in group discussions
- build upon your analytical and evaluative skills
- develop your written and oral communication skills
- develop your skills in research methodology.
Method of assessment
Two units are studied each year with an exam at the end of both years. There is no coursework involved in this subject.
What will I be able to progress to?
You will be well prepared to progress to university to study related subjects including social research, social or health care, public relations, marketing, human resources, the police force, law, criminology, media and journalism.
Combined with other A-levels it will also prepare you for study and work in a range of other areas. Aliya Malik (ex-Langdon School) studied this as one of her A-levels and achieved a grade A. She is now studying law at City University.
