One-year AS/two-year A-level
Do you see yourself as the next big name in fashion design? If so, you will love this subject. You will be introduced to the textile workshop to investigate dyeing, printing, embroidery and drawing. You will explore these techniques to develop a range of textile outcomes for fashion garments and fabrics for interior design.
Required qualifications
Five or more A*–C grades at GCSE including an art-related subject and English language. At your interview you will be required to show a portfolio of art or design work to demonstrate your interest in art and design.
What will I study?
The course will focus on:
- dyeing, embroidery and printed textiles
- contemporary textiles
- drawing workshops
- the design development process.
On the course you will:
- collaborate with visual and performing arts students to make costumes for performances
- carry out research at galleries and locations such as Craft Council and Clothes Show Live
- take part in live projects with industry professionals
- organise the college fashion show
- visit European trade fairs to develop your industry knowledge.
Method of assessment
Over two years you will complete four units. The final unit of each year is externally set by the examination board.
What will I be able to progress to?
If you wish to pursue a career in textiles you will be well prepared to undertake a foundation course at university. In previous years, students have progressed to courses at art colleges including Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, Ravensbourne and Camberwell School of Art.
Other information
You will need to pay for your own art and textile-specific materials, some of which are available to buy from the college. Research trips will require a small financial contribution.
