Textiles
A-level
One-year AS/two-year A-level
Do you see yourself as the next big name in fashion design? If so, you will love this subject. You will be introduced to the textile workshop areas to investigate dyeing, printing, embroidery and drawing. You will explore these techniques to develop a range of textile outcomes for fashion garments and fabrics for interior design.
Required qualifications
Five or more A*-C grades at GCSE including English language and preferably including art or textiles but not essential, depending on your portfolio.
What will I study?
The course will focus on:
- dyeing, embroidery and printed textiles
- contemporary textiles
- drawing workshops
- the design development process.
On the course you will:
- collaborate with visual and performing arts students to make costumes for performances
- carry out research at galleries and locations such as V&A, Craft Council and Clothes Show Live
- take part in live projects with industry professionals
- develop your technical skills in embroidery and printed textiles
- organise the college fashion show
- develop your knowledge of the industry through visits to European trade fairs.
Method of assessment
Over two years you will complete four units. The final unit of each year is externally set by the exam board.
What will I be able to progress to?
A-level textiles will add a creative element to your A-level timetable. If you wish to pursue a career in textiles you will be well prepared to undertake a foundation course at university. In the past, students have progressed to courses at Central St Martins, Camberwell School of Art and other art colleges. Alisha Gill (ex-Lammas School) studied this subject as one of her A-levels and achieved a grade B. She is now studying a foundation course at the University of the Arts, London College of Communication.
Other information
You will need to pay for your own art and textile-specific materials, some of which are available to buy from the college. Research trips will require a small financial contribution.
