If you like to form your own opinions by looking at different sides of an argument then this course will help you to develop the skills to do this effectively. Thinking critically is central to successful study at university and this subject will develop your ability to analyse and evaluate.

Required qualifications

Five or more A*-C grades at GCSE including English language. This is a challenging subject and is most suitable for students who are qualified to take a five AS-level programme. It is also highly recommended for those students who are interested in applying to Russell group universities.

What will I study?

The course will focus on:

  • interpreting, analysing and evaluating ideas and arguments
  • constructing arguments
  • persuasive and precise expression
  • topical material from newspapers, radio and TV.

On the course you will:

  • take part in debates and discussions
  • analyse newspaper articles, news programmes and documentaries
  • take part in educational visits.

Method of assessment

Assessment is through two examinations. There is not a coursework component on this course.

What will I be able to progress to?

This course will help you in any subject where you have to present or analyse reasoned arguments and will be particularly useful for university applications. It will also help you to develop skills necessary for the LNAT (the admissions test for law degrees).

Other information

This course can be studied in the second year by students who have already completed a year of AS-level study.
