Applied science - medical
Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma (BTEC national diploma)
Two-years, (equivalent to three A-levels)
This programme will suit you if you would like a career in the field of medicine, but do not have the high grades required to study to be a doctor. It will offer you an alternative route to working in this field as a science technician. You will explore the practical side of science with an emphasis on medical application.
Required qualifications
Four or more A*-C grades at GCSE including science or a full level two pass in a related subject plus two other GCSEs at grade C or above. Entry requirements for students currently studying an intermediate vocational course will be based on their performance at intermediate level. Depending on your GCSE grades, you may also take an AS/A-level alongside the national diploma.
What will I study?
The course will focus on:
- scientific principles
- laboratory organisation
- workplace practices and medical ethics
- human physiology
- biomedical science and medical physics
- micro-biology and genetic engineering.
On the course you will:
- carry out practical procedures
- plan and perform investigations
- visit hospitals and industries
- attend a one-week work placement
- look at the role of a science technicians.
Method of assessment
Assessment is through the completion of internally and externally assessed coursework.
What will I be able to progress to?
On completion of this programme you will be equipped to enter employment as a science technician or to take a university course in a related subject. Ideal careers include technical work, such as nursing, medical laboratory analysis, biomedical science, forensic science, research and education. This course will not provide you with the qualifications to study medicine at university. Nikita Amin (ex-Plashet School) completed this course and is now studying adult nursing at City University.
