IT practitioners - systems support

What makes a computer work? This course will focus on designing computing and networking solutions. You will analyse business systems and learn how to support users of computer systems and develop software solutions. If you want a career in designing, implementing and maintaining computer and network systems this course is ideal for you.

Required qualifications

Four or more A*-C grades at GCSE including mathematics or a full level two pass in a related subject, plus two other GCSEs at grade C or above. Entry requirements for students currently studying an intermediate vocational course will be based on their performance at intermediate level. Depending on your GCSE grades, you may also take an AS/A-level alongside the national diploma.

What will I study?

The course will focus on:

  • computer hardware, software development and information systems
  • end-user support
  • website management
  • PC specification and maintenance
  • network administration and networking project
  • animation.

On the course you will:

  • create your own software programme 
  • gain practical work experience 
  • attend visits to discover how computers are used in industry and commerce
  • attend presentations by guest speakers.   

Method of assessment

You will be assessed internally by assignments and coursework. You may also do in-class assessments to test specific skills and knowledge and your practical work will be observed.

What will I be able to progress to?

On completion, you will have a number of options to choose from, including progressing to university to study computing, networking, data communications, telecommunications, software engineering, games software development, information systems, internet technologies, business-related degrees or computer systems engineering. You could also seek employment as a technician, trainee manager or junior network support technician.
