Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma (BTEC national diploma)
Two-years, (equivalent to three A-levels)

Media is ever-changing with new technology leading its development. You will explore a range of digital media and moving image industries. You will devise exciting and creative solutions to projects through the use of a variety of video and multimedia technology. You will be given the opportunity to specialise in multimedia or moving image in your second year.

Required qualifications

Four or more A*-C grades at GCSE or a full level two pass in a related subject plus two other GCSEs at grade C or above. Entry requirements for students currently studying an intermediate vocational course will be based on their performance at intermediate level. Depending on your GCSE grades, you may also take an AS/A-level alongside the national diploma.

What will I study?

The course will focus on:

  • multimedia authoring and scriptwriting
  • animation and film production
  • structure and regulation of the media industry
  • software packages including Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver and Flash
  • advertising
  • web design.

On the course you will:

  • create a range of multimedia solutions
  • make posters, web-banners, title sequences, animations and web pages
  • research current industry practices and visit TV studios and screenings
  • make your own films
  • improve your communication skills.

Method of assessment

Assessment is through practical projects. You will be expected to create a portfolio that will contain work relating to film production, media theory and multimedia assignments. 

What will I be able to progress to?

A variety of options will be open to you after completing this course, including further study in higher education or various areas of work such as advertising, film and TV production, desk-top publishing, multimedia design, web design and journalism. Osvaldo Moniz completed this course and is now studying media at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication.
