Music technology
Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma (BTEC national diploma)
Two-years, (equivalent to three A-levels)
You will use state-of-the-art music facilities including a suite of Apple Mac computers with professional standard software, digital recording studios and a wide selection of instruments. You will focus on technology, theory and performance to develop the skills required by professionals working in the music industry.
Required qualifications
Four A*-C grades at GCSE (preferably including music) or a full level two pass/MERIT (a correction added by John but not sure if it is official) in a related subject plus two other GCSEs at grade C or above. Entry requirements for students currently studying an intermediate vocational course will be based on their performance at intermediate level. You will need to be interested in the way music and technology work together. Depending on your GCSE grades, you may also take an AS/A-level alongside the national diploma.
What will I study?
The course will focus on:
- studio production
- performance
- music and multimedia
- composition techniques.
On the course you will:
- perform and sound engineer at venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican and the college’s own arts venue, Stratford Circus
- collaborate with visual and performing arts students
- attend industry seminars
- benefit from visits from music professionals.
Method of assessment
Your coursework and final major project will be continually assessed throughout the two years and will be externally verified.
What will I be able to progress to?
On completion, you will be able to progress to a range of music technology, sound design and music courses at universities and specialist colleges. These can lead to careers in production, management, teaching and performance. Elliott Popeau-George achieved a triple distinction for this course and is now studying music, technology and innovation at De Monfort University.
