Performing arts

Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma (BTEC national diploma)
Two-years, (equivalent to three A-levels)
students

You will explore a range of performance styles and techniques and develop your skills as a performer. You will learn how to analyse, discuss and devise performance. Most sessions are practical and are focused on dance and drama. However you will also study theory and be trained in stage management, sound, lighting, costumes and set design.

Required qualifications

Four A*-C grades at GCSE or a full level two pass in a related subject plus two other GCSEs at grade C or above. Entry requirements for students currently studying an intermediate vocational course will be based on their performance at intermediate level. Depending on your GCSE grades, you may also take an AS/A-level alongside the national diploma.

What will I study?

The course will focus on:

  • practical study of a wide range of dance and drama techniques
  • creating your own drama and dance performance work
  • developing vocal and physical skills
  • understanding the rehearsal and performance process
  • exploring the work of performing arts practitioners, different theories and styles
  • investigating employment opportunities within the industry.

On the course you will:

  • take part in practical workshops and work with professional practitioners and companies
  • showcase your work at high profile venues such as The Royal Festival Hall and the college’s own arts venue, Stratford Circus
  • develop your skills and versatility as a performer
  • critically evaluate your own work and that of others
  • see live dance and drama productions.

Method of assessment

You will be assessed throughout your two years of study through assignments and performances.

What will I be able to progress to?

On completion, you will be prepared to progress to further study and work in performing arts including acting, dance and working backstage and on the technical side of production.
