Sports development, coaching and fitness

Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma
Two-years, (equivalent to three A-levels)
students

You will develop your interpersonal communication skills and learn to understand issues that affect personal sports performance. You will cover topics that link closely to specific employment areas and have the opportunity to work with children in the community. You will learn about fitness testing programmes and the nutritional value of diet and performance. There is the possibility of being involved in the sports leadership academy within this programme.

Required qualifications

Four or more A*–C grades at GCSE and a grade D in mathematics or English language. Or a full level two pass in a related subject plus two other GCSEs at grade C or above. Entry requirements for students currently studying a level 2 diploma vocational course will be based on their performance at level 2.

What will I study?

The course will focus on:

  • practical sport and sport in society
  • the body in action
  • nutrition for weight management
  • ethics and values in sport
  • fitness testing and health and safety in sport
  • sports development and the principles of coaching.

On the course you will:

  • develop communication skills and leadership qualities through organising sports events for young children
  • complete work experience based projects
  • plan, implement and evaluate fitness training programmes
  • work productively within a team
  • develop your research skills.

Method of assessment

Assessment will involve a range of written and practical projects as well as oral presentations.

What will I be able to progress to?

The course will provide you with transferable skills required to work in the areas of leisure, sport and health including roles such as physical instruction, sports coaching, health consultancy and sports development. You could also progress to university to continue with a sports-related degree or you may opt for a different area of study.
