Much of your learning will take place through placements at local schools, day nurseries and family centres. This practical experience, combined with your college lessons, will enable you to learn how to observe young children and understand how they learn. You will study child health and development and understand how you can help young children to progress by offering high quality care and education.

Required qualifications

Successful completion of a broad GCSE or equivalent programme including two A*–D grades in English language and another relevant subject and a good school reference. You will also need to provide evidence of a successful work placement with children.

What will I study?

The course will focus on:

  • the physical care and development of children
  • working with young children
  • emotional and social development
  • preparing for employment with young children
  • working with babies in their first year
  • parents and carers.

On the course you will:

  • gain work experience in a variety of realistic environments
  • work with professional practitioners and experienced teachers
  • develop your key skills including IT, numeracy and communication.

Method of assessment

A supervisor will assess your practical work with children and you will also write an assignment for each unit of the course. At the end of the course you will sit a test.

What will I be able to progress to?

You will have a number of options to choose from including progressing to study an advanced level course such as the CACHE level 3 diploma. You may decide to enter employment in a role such as a playgroup worker, nursery assistant or family helper.

Other information

You will be required to complete a Criminal Records Bureau form confirming that you have no criminal convictions that prevent you from working with children or vulnerable adults. It will be administered by the college at the start of the course.
