Do you ever look at magazines and think you would design the pages differently? If you are interested in desktop publishing then you will really enjoy this course. It provides an extensive overview of a wide range of journalistic practices – both visual and text-based. You will write various articles and learn how to use a range of industry-standard desktop publishing packages including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.
Required qualifications
Five or more A*-C grades at GCSE including English language.
What will I study?
The course will focus on:
- industry-standard packages such as Photoshop, InDesign and Dreamweaver
- regulations and censorship
- media techniques of persuasion
- development of journalistic writing skills
- development of image-based creative manipulation skills.
On the course you will:
- create copy and develop images for a magazine
- design a website
- design print materials for an advertising campaign
- complete journalism-related work experience
- attend journalism master classes given by employers or universities.
Method of assessment
You will be assessed by coursework and a final major project; there are no examinations.
What will I be able to progress to?
The course will enable you to progress to university to study courses such as journalism, media and communications. Depending on your other advanced level courses it will also prepare you for a range of degree level courses or you may choose to move straight into work or work experience.
Other information
Please note that you need to study this course for a full two years to gain the qualification. We also offer a specialist pathway in journalism and media for students keen to pursue further study and careers in these areas.
