Music practice (composing)

Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma (National Award)
Two-year vocational (equivalent to one A-level)

With a strong emphasis on performance, you will be encouraged to perform your original compositions in a variety of settings and venues. This exciting course provides an opportunity to practice music through a range of work-related projects.

Required qualifications

Five or more A*-C grades at GCSE including English language. These should include music, or you will need to demonstrate relevant instrumental or vocal experience, skills, enthusiasm and aptitude.

What will I study?

The course will focus on:

  • music performance and technology
  • musical arranging and composing
  • music theory and harmony
  • world music.

On the course you will:

  • work with professional musicians and performers
  • perform your own work
  • improve your listening and analytical skills
  • enhance your knowledge of music styles and forms
  • be expected to receive additional instrumental lessons as part of the NewVIc music bursary.

Method of assessment

You will be assessed through coursework, with four of the units assessed at NewVIc and the other two performance units assessed externally. Please note that you must complete all six units to gain accreditation.

What will I be able to progress to?

This is an ideal subject if you wish to study aspects of music at university or go on to careers in the industry.
