Specialist pathway
Two-years, level three
Do you already know that you want to work as an economist? Economics favours quantitative skills and critical thinkers. This pathway is a package of AS/A-levels and enrichment activities designed for students who are committed to pursuing a career in economics.
Required qualifications
You will need to average B grades at GCSE and achieve at least a grade B for mathematics. This is a challenging pathway which you are strongly advised to research well before choosing to study it. You need to be confident in your numerical skills and demonstrate a strong academic ability.
What will I study?
You will study the following A-level subjects over two years:
- A-level economics
- A-level mathematics
- two other AS/A-level subjects of your choice. At interview you will be given guidance on appropriately challenging subjects to help you progress to a competitive university or course.
Enrichment
You will participate in a range of enrichment activities which will help you to stand out as an ambitious student keen to progress in economics. These activities will include:
- an internship at a recognised financial institution
- taking part in target two point zero
- an interest rate challenge run by the Bank of England and The Times
- Proshare – a team-based nationwide shares investment competition
- specialist workshops and guidance sessions with economists to support your career progression.
What will I be able to progress to?
This pathway is excellent preparation for further study at university on courses including economics, banking, financial services, business management, accounting and law. After university you could progress to specialist economist roles including investment management, transport economics, financial analyst, share management, retail banking, corporate banking, insurance broking, risk management and mortgage broking.
