Specialist pathway
Two-years, level three
students

Do you dream of working in the exciting fields of journalism or media? These industries offer varied job opportunities including moving image, print, online journalism, public relations, advertising and communications. The pathway is a package of AS/A-levels and enrichment activities which will prepare you for a career in journalism or a related media field.

Required qualifications

Five or more A*-C grades at GCSE including English language and mathematics. You must have a strong interest in pursuing a career in journalism or media.

What will I study?

You will study the following subjects over two years:

  • A-level English language
  • A-level media studies
  • national award in media – print (equivalent to one A-level)
  • one other AS/A-level subject of your choice. Government and politics, critical thinking and history are recommended.

Enrichment

You will participate in a range of enrichment activities which will help you to stand out as an ambitious student keen to progress in the journalism and media industries. These activities will include some of the following:

  • work experience at a newspaper, magazine, advertising agency or marketing department
  • specialist workshops and guidance sessions with industry professionals to support your career progression
  • live projects in collaboration with a wide range of media groups.

What will I be able to progress to?

This pathway will prepare you for further study at university on courses including journalism, communications, public relations, multimedia journalism and advertising. After university or instead of further study you could progress to specialist roles including press or multimedia journalism, marketing and communications, management, public relations, advertising and international management.
