Two-years, level three
Are you determined to pursue a career in the medical field? Medicine is one of the most competitive courses at university and to become a doctor or a dentist you will need high grades in specific subjects at both GCSE and A-level. This pathway is a package of AS/A-levels and enrichment activities designed for students who are clear that they want to pursue a career in medicine.
Required qualifications
Five or more A*–B grades at GCSE including science, English language and mathematics. You will also need to be able to demonstrate a strong interest in, and commitment to, pursuing a career in the medical field.
What will I study?
You will be assigned to gifted and talented classes and will study the following subjects over two years:
- A-level chemistry
- A-level biology
- A-level mathematics or physics
- one other AS/A-level subject of your choice which demonstrates your strong writing skills such as English, history or sociology.
Enrichment
You will participate in a range of enrichment activities and receive extra support which will help you to stand out as a committed student determined to progress in the medical field. These activities will include:
- specialist workshops and guidance events with employers, hospitals and universities
- being mentored by students from SAMDA (Student Assisted Medical and Dental Applicants), an organisation which helps ambitious students prepare for studying medicine at university
- support and guidance in finding relevant work experience
- specialist support from your tutor.
What will I be able to progress to?
Universities will only accept medical students with 340 UCAS points (equivalent to two A grades and a B grade at A-level and at least five A*–B grades at GCSE including science, English language and mathematics).
Studying this pathway will help you to meet the strict university entry requirements and prepare you for medical entry examinations. You will be able to progress to study subjects including medicine, dentistry, ophthalmology, optometry and pharmacy.
