Academy history
Cricket is one of the most successful sports the college has taken part in competitively. The under-17 and under-19 teams have won numerous competitions, including prestigious tournaments like the London Cup. The cricket team attracts students from all over London and beyond to study at NewVIc.
Famous faces
The success of the team has led to many former college players either going on to play the game professionally or coaching cricket for a living. Former NewVIc fast bowler Mohammed Admin has represented Essex and Sussex at all levels of professional cricket and England world-cup star and recent test debutant Ravi Bopara represented NewVIc during the 2000/01 season.
Recruitment in to the cricket academy
If you’re interested in playing for the academy then please let your interviewer know when you have an interview at the college. You can also register your interest at the annual college Freshers’ Fair that takes place each September. Formal trials take place twice a year and players are recruited throughout the year during weekly academy sessions and via the Wednesday evening ‘open to all’ cricket session.
Academy training
Wednesday morning and evening training sessions take place each week. September to December involves strong indoor cricket focus. January to February incorporates more theoretical and fitness aspects of cricket. March to July includes strong outdoor cricket focus.
Cricket academy players are expected to attend all training sessions and also complete a weekly fitness training schedule to support their technical programme.
Player management
Academy players are expected to keep a high standard of work within their curriculum studies, maintain a 95% attendance rate and meet all curriculum deadlines in order to hold their position within the squad.
Matches
Annually NewVIc enters into several outdoor competitions, such as the SESSA six-a-side tournament and the Essex Cup.
University sports scholarships and other opportunities
The cricket academy has strong links with several cricket clubs (Newham CC, Leyton County CC, Wanstead CC, Ilford CC and Walthamstow CC). Players are referred for trials if deemed good enough as a result of performances during NewVIc training and matches.
Several NewVIc players have progressed to university on cricket scholarship schemes, most recently to Anglia Ruskin Cambridge. NewVIc players are strongly supported during their applications for university.
Monitoring and evaluation
Player monitoring takes place each week through training observation and records taken by coaches to give a coach a better idea of how a player is performing. Self-evaluation will also be encouraged via the use of video-monitoring.
Visiting stars
High-profile players and coaches have visited the college, most notably India’s international star all-rounder Irfan Pathan, and former Surrey and England Captain, Keith Fletcher. Our existing links with Essex CCC are also utilised with the annual visits from high profile cricketing personalities to offer specialist coaching and mentoring.
Coach education, volunteering and work opportunities
NewVIc runs and hosts annual level 1 cricket coaching awards to ensure NewVIc students stay involved with the game, increase their theoretical knowledge of the game, and perhaps guide them towards a successful career in coaching. This is run in partnership with Essex County Cricket Association and the Newham Sports Development Unit.
