Glen Road Mural opens

Successful NewVIc students with Eddie Playfair

On Friday 9 September the Glen Road Community Mural was officially opened. This comes after two years of painting and preparation involving over 1,000 local people.

The mural comprises of 75  panels, each 2.44 metres high, with a total length of close to 100 metres, painted by local adults, young people and children, including students from NewVIc, and other local schools and community groups. The very first panel is made up of beautiful portrait photographs taken by NewVIc students which represent local residents.

Primarily funded and commissioned by PSBL (Plaistow South Big Local), with major contributions from partners LBN Plaistow Community Neighbourhood and Barts Health NHS Trust, the mural was overseen by artist-organiser Madhumita Bose-Thomas.

There are four ‘sections’ to the mural – starting at the end nearest Prince Regent Lane, panels move from dealing with local history, through health issues and then education, to a final section (nearest the hospital’s main entrance) celebrating local community and diversity.

The MuralIt is a true “community” mural, in that, within the broad themes and schema, panels were prepared, drawn and painted from scratch by locals, and then worked on by Madhumita to integrate them into the final scheme – the exception being the final panel which was contributed by professional artist Serena Sussex.

At the launch Cllr Forhad Hussain thanked Steven Kern, Student Development Leader, for his partnership work on the mural project from its inception. Steven worked with Bhavin Bhadresa, Media PTM, and NewVIc Media students to create the ‘We Are Newham’ photo exhibition  as part of the first phase of the project. This was followed up by the creation of a Nrich activity where students worked with artist-organiser Madhumita Bose-Thomas in designing and painting seven mural boards covering the theme of Community and Plaistow History.
