Flying high

Folu Popoola with her awardThree years ago NewVIc students, Arnaud Ibara, Folu Popoola and Sarwar Abulrahman, each won a bursary from London City Airport. The bursary gave them financial support during their time at university providing them with a £2,000 a year grant. They were also mentored by a London City Airport manager who gave the students help and guidance throughout their time at university. During their holidays they were given paid work experience in a number of different departments at the airport.

This summer the students graduated from university and were invited to the airport to an awards ceremony celebrating their success. Folu Popoola (ex-Royal Docks Community School) studied A-level law, mathematics and psychology and AS-level further mathematics whilst at NewVIc. She went on to achieve a first class honours degree from University College London. Folu commented on the scheme:

“I come from a single parent family with six children so the financial support has enabled me to buy books and a computer to help with my studies. I have since been accepted to Oxford University to study a masters in mathematics and computer science.”
