The first NewVIc Lecture
What counts as an educated 19 year old today?
Are the current models of education for this age group sufficient to meet the needs and aspirations of all young people and of the wider community?
Professor Ann Hodgson from the Institute of Education lead NewVIc's first lecture considering these fundamental questions, which were the subject of the recently completed Nuffield Review; the most rigorous and independent investigation of every aspect of this phase of education that there has been. Its publication, Education for All, is a highly readable summary of its recommendations. The review concluded that while much has been achieved, we need:
- A broader vision of education
- Greater respect for practical and active learning
- Assessment to support rather than impoverish learning
- Respect for teacher expertise
- A more unified qualification system
- Strongly collaborative, rather than competitive local learning systems
- More reflective and participative policy making
The Nuffield Review comes at a key time as 14-19 education policy will be a key issue at the next general election. The first NewVIc lecture explored this topic and gave NewVIc staff and stakeholders an opportunity to discuss some of the big issues about the future of 14-19 education.
