Star NewVIc students head to Oxbridge

NewVIc students on results day with Principal Eddie Playfair

Students and staff at Newham Sixth Form College (NewVIc) are celebrating another good year of A-level results. The college entered a record number of 1,120 candidates and 16 out of 35 A-level subjects achieved 100% pass rates.

An impressive 117 A grades were achieved, 20 of these were the new A* grade which was introduced this year to highlight the brightest students. Many of the A* grades were achieved in the most challenging subjects; 3 in biology, 2 in chemistry, 2 in mathematics and 3 in sociology.

Achieving A* grades does not seem to have been a problem for two students who gained 5 A* grades between them which has secured them both places at Oxbridge. Sidra Hussain (ex-Plashet School) is delighted to be accepting a place at the University of Cambridge to study medicine. She achieved excellent A-levels in some of the most challenging subjects biology (A*), chemistry (A*), mathematics (A*) and English literature (A).

Aswathy Mohanlal (ex-Brampton Manor School) will be taking up her place to read Portuguese and linguistics at St Peter’s College at the University of Oxford after achieving A-levels in English language (A*), media studies (A*) and maths (A). Aswathy commented on her results:

“I am ecstatic! I worked really hard but I still didn’t expect to do so well. I couldn’t have done it without the teachers at NewVIc, they really supported and encouraged me.”

The popularity of courses such as the medicine pathway offered exclusively by NewVIc has meant that exam entries in mathematics, chemistry and physics have risen faster than the national average, from 162 last year to 241 this year.

Many of the college’s subjects achieved 100% pass rates including classical civilisation, computing, dance, drama, film studies, German, politics, history, media, music, philosophy, religious studies, sociology, Spanish, Urdu and world development.

Students on vocational courses also achieved excellent results. NewVIc entered nearly 900 students on vocational programmes this year, over 500 at advanced level. There were 100% pass rates on 12 of these courses including the national diplomas in health and social care, child care, IT, media, music and performing arts and national awards in business, engineering and travel. The highest award of a triple distinction was achieved by an outstanding 98 candidates. The success on vocational courses will allow the students to progress to further study at university, employment or further study in their chosen area.

NewVIc principal, Eddie Playfair, commented:
“Once again, NewVIc students have achieved good results. They are well deserved and they come after two years of tremendous commitment and consistent hard work from all these students and staff. We are so proud of everyone and this means that most of these young people will get on to the university courses they applied for, including some really challenging degree courses at top universities. This confirms that NewVIc really is the place to study if you’re ambitious and want to achieve the best you can. Well done everyone!”
