NewVIc students make headlines

Students from a range of subject areas including media, government and politics, sociology, law and English had the opportunity to attend a lecture entitled ‘Power, politics and the press’.
The aim of the session was to not only support the curriculum and give insight into careers in journalism but also to develop students’ life skills. “Many of the students are now old enough to vote in the upcoming elections and the session introduced how the newspapers they read may influence their decisions and ideas”, said Dr Siân Owen, who coordinates the lecture programme at NewVIc.
The students took on the roles of reporters, journalists and editor and were assigned to the different newspapers. The presenters staged and acted out two press conferences. The young reporters questioned an Iraq war widow and a celebrity involved in a scandal and then the groups designed and wrote their front pages. Students who took part commented that “it was very informative” and it was “good to give our opinions on how our newspaper would look if we were editors”.
The lecture was organised though The Debate Chamber and formed part of the college’s NewVIc+ lecture series which promotes greater understanding, responsibility and action.
