NewVIc students plan a greener future for staff at London City Airport

NewVIc students recently presented their plans for a sustainable staff travel plan for London City Airport (LCA). In the midst of exams and coursework deadlines, the students worked extremely hard on the project and were rewarded by the airport with tickets to see Beyonce at the O2 with staff from the LCA’s Community Team.
The extracurricular project started with a trip to the airport to meet staff and start researching sustainable travel schemes to enable the airport to deliver its new Travel Plan. The students then worked together to develop ideas, such as walking plans, cycling clubs and car sharing schemes.
The students presented their ideas to airport staff, showing them detailed information about the plans as well as marketing materials they had produced. The airport is now rolling out sustainable travel schemes to its staff, and the students’ ideas will be incorporated into plans.
A-level student Luke Holland appreciated the chance to work on the project: “I really enjoyed the project. We got an insight into what LCA offer their staff and how the airport operates. Seeing Beyonce was a great experience, she was amazing. Being in the VIP Box was an unforgettable experience.”
Elizabeth Hegarty, Community Relations Manager at LCA said of the students’ work: “London City Airport has 2,000 staff on-site working with 59 different employers. This project allowed the students to gain an insight into and share their ideas for one of our up and coming sustainability projects which affects so many airport workers. We are really pleased with the students’ creative ideas.“
