Ex NewVIc students Joseph Toonga and his company ‘Just Us Dance Theatre’ presented two evenings evening of hip hop,contemporary dance, spoken word and DJing at The Place, one of London’s most prestigious dance venues.
The event showcased the work of some of the UK’s freshest and emerging talent as well as Just Us Dance Theatre’s newest duet It’s Between Us, an emotional piece with original score by emerging hip hop composer Orin Norbert.
The programme also premiered works by the Let's Shine Mentorship scheme – a collaboration between Joseph and students from Lister School, NewVIc, Lewisham College and The Place.
Joseph Toonga studied at NewVIc before continuing his training at Lewisham College followed by a BA Hons in Contemporary Dance at The Place (London Contemporary Dance School). He set up ‘Just Us Dance Theatre’ with fellow NewVIc alumni Ricardo da Silva. Joseph was awarded winner of the Blueprint Bursary 2011, recognized worldwide as supporting and nurturing emerging choreographers. He has since been invited to choreograph works all over Europe and both Joseph and Ricardo have worked with some of the biggest names in dance including Richard Alston, Robert Hylton and Wayne McGregor.
Joseph says of his time at NewVIc “NewVIc gave me the opportunity to express my thoughts through dance showcases and outside projects. It also opened my eyes to the dance industry.
Being at NewVIc really helped me develop the self-discipline and drive to push to achieve my ambitions, thanks to the energy and support I was receiving from my teachers.”
