VI things about NewVIc

NewVIc is a large sixth form college situated in the heart of Newham. We are proud of our college and below we have highlighted six areas that we think make NewVIc special.

1. Teaching and learning
2. Diversity
3. Student support
4. Extra curricular activities
5. NewVIc Baccalaureate
6. Stratford Circus

1. Teaching and learning

Our college community includes over 300 dedicated staff who are focused on ensuring that all our students have the opportunity to achieve their potential. In 2008 our students achieved 95% pass rate for A-level subjects and 97% pass rate in advanced vocational courses. In our recent Ofsted report, Ofsted praised the college’s “outstanding response to the needs and interests of learners” which enables students to achieve and progress.

NewVIc offers courses that range from advanced to entry level in an extensive range of subject areas. We run over 40 A-levels and over 20 vocational courses including the new diplomas and BTEC Nationals.

We offer specialist pathways for gifted students who want careers in highly competitive industries such as medicine. These packages offer students four relevant AS subjects, work experience and exciting opportunities to take part in workshops and meet professionals. Specialist pathways provide students with a welcomed advantage when they apply and progress to higher education or employment.

2. Diversity

Newham has one of the most ethnically diverse and young populations in the country and NewVIc reflects this rich diversity. The borough is also undergoing dramatic regeneration and with the Olympics 2012 taking place in Stratford Newham will be at the heart of Olympics activity.

NewVIc students have a wide range of interests, skills and experiences which they bring to the college and we encourage cross-curricular collaboration. This provides an exciting cultural platform for all aspects of life at NewVIc including involvement in the arts, debate and sporting interests.

At the college we promote world wide equality and diversity. We organise events and campaigns, inviting external speakers to the college, to raise awareness of different cultures and identities. We celebrate and honour a variety of national campaigns such as Dyslexia Awareness Week, Fair Trade Fortnight, Remembrance Day and Black History Month to encourage equality of opportunity, value of individual differences and understanding of rights.

NewVIc also caters for diversity in learning by offering a wide range of courses at a variety of levels and we support students with different learning styles and needs. This was recognised by Ofsted who felt that our strong teaching team are “adept at developing students with a range of abilities”.

3. Student support

We want all our students to achieve their true potential and enjoy their time at NewVIc. Ofsted recognised NewVIc’s comprehensive range of student support services in the recent inspection. The support we offer our students includes dedicated tutors, careers guidance, care and additional learning support.

We have a strong track record of progression to employment, university and training. Each year around we support around 700 students to progress to university by offering comprehensive careers advice and guidance, coordinating visits to universities and helping with applications.

4 Extra-curricular activities

NewVIc’s “very wide range of enrichment activities” was highlight by Ofsted and it encourages all students to get involved. Our sports academy runs a wide range of team and individual sports including football, cricket, basketball, table tennis, badminton and cheer leading. We have good sports facilities which include a large sports hall, gym, tennis courts and sports field. NewVIc also provides many opportunities for students to get involved in creative and performing arts at lunchtime and after college.

There are a variety of community activities and volunteering opportunities at the college to help develop students’ wider skills. Students can join NewVIc’s student union and council and there are many opportunities to take part in debates and visits. We also arrange for many influential and successful individuals to visit the college to inspire our students. Recent visitors have included Gordon Brown, musician Napoleon and international wheelchair basketball champion Ade Adepitan.

5. NewVIc Baccalaureate

Employers and universities look for people who are creative, can think for themselves and work well with others. At NewVIc, all students have the opportunity to develop these skills so that they may become successful learners, citizens and workers.

The NewVIc Bacc highlights students’ wider achievements and skills. It also prepares them to be able to make a real difference in the world as an informed and active individual.

To achieve the NewVIc Bacc, students need to:

  • be successful in their main subjects
  • develop their skills of communication, research, personal, learning and thinking through the NewVIc+ programme and a research project
  • undertake personal challenges: contribute to the college and wider community by volunteering, getting involved in sport or creative arts and work-related work experience
  • plan for their future: career development.

They also need a high level of commitment to their course and high attendance rate. The NewVIc Bacc is recognised by several universities and the most successful students receive sponsorship and prizes from local universities and employers.

6. Stratford Circus

Stratford Circus is NewVIc’s own purpose-built arts centre. The centre has a full programme of events including comedy, dance and music. Stratford Circus offers learning opportunities for people of all ages and abilities, a wide variety of courses, professional development and opportunities for schools and teachers to participate. Students can work with industry professionals and gain valuable experience of working in a professional environment, either as performers or in production.
