Applying to NewVIc

September - choosing a NewVIc course

Students should read through the prospectus and use our website to find out more about the courses that we offer and about the NewVIc student experience. You can request prospectuses for your students by calling 020 7473 4110 or emailing advice@newvic.ac.uk.

Encourage students to discuss their career ideas and options with lots of different people: parents, carers, teachers, Connexions advisers and friends. If you or your students have any further questions about the college or courses, our advice and recruitment team will be happy to help.

October - open day

On Saturday 13 October 2012, the college will be open to all prospective students accompanied by their parents or guardians. This is a fantastic opportunity for your students to see the college facilities and speak to teachers and students about course choices and life at NewVIc.

November to April - completing an application form

You can request application forms for your students by calling 020 7473 4110 or emailing advice@newvic.ac.uk.

Students should take time to complete the form accurately as any missing information is likely to delay the processing of the form. The completed form needs to be referenced and stamped by the school. In particular, we need an estimate of students’ likely grades (based on mock exam results), your opinion about the suitability of the programme chosen and details of any learning support needs. A full set of guidelines for referencing applications can be downloaded here.

We are accepting applications from November 2012 onwards. We recommend that students apply as soon as possible and some courses fill up quickly. Completed forms should be sent to Advice and Recruitment, NewVIc, Prince Regent Lane, Newham, London, E13 8SG.

January to April - interviews

The next step will be an interview which will take place in the evening either at your school or at NewVIc. The interview is an opportunity for us to establish whether students are right for their course and NewVIc. However, very importantly, it is also an opportunity for your students to speak to the teachers about NewVIc and the courses we offer so that they are confident they are choosing the best course for them.

The method for applying and the format of the interviews depends on whether the school is situated in or out of the borough.

Newham feeder schools

Discussions will take place before November with all Newham schools about the interview process. Each school will have an interview date between January and March and the interviews will either take place at the college or within the school on this date. All completed forms should be handed in to the school and passed on to the college at least two weeks before this interview date.

Out of borough schools

Students should send their completed application forms with a school reference directly to the college. Students will then be invited in for an interview on the next available date. The students will be given a guided tour of the college on the interview day and will also meet the Principal and current students.

On the interview day the students will be told whether or not they have a conditional place at the college. If they have received a conditional offer, they will then receive a confirmation letter in the post. The place is conditional that the students achieve the grade requirements of their course.

If students do not receive an offer from the college our advice and recruitment team will provide support and guidance about suitable opportunities at other colleges.

March - open day

There is another opportunity to attend an open day on Saturday 9 March 2013. They will have the opportunity to try out various activities related to the subjects they have chosen. They will also be able to meet some of their teachers and other students hoping to start at NewVIc in 2013.

June/July - taster days

During the summer term successful applicants will be invited to come and experience a day in the life of a NewVIc student. Students will try out their chosen subjects and courses and also find out about the clubs and activities run at NewVIc.

August/September - enrolment

We will write to students to let them know which day they need to bring their final exam results along to NewVIc to enrol on their college course. Students who have not met their target qualifications will be offered advice on how to proceed and efforts will be made to enrol students on alternative courses.

Every student will be required to pay a £50 enrolment deposit which will be refunded on completion of the course.
