My NewVIc Victory: Abed Alah Mosa Al Rafaee

Maths A*, Physics A, Further Maths A
Going to: Cambridge or Bristol University to study aerospace engineering

Abed is a Syrian refugee who fled the war in 2012.  He arrived in London four years ago from Lebanon where he attended Beit Jala Seconday School.

How has NewVIc supported you in your studies and aspirations?

Everyone was very supportive from the start and has always encouraged me to do well.

Who has inspired you at NewVIc?

My Maths teachers have really inspired me.

Are you the first in your family to go to university / apprenticeship / training?

No, lots of my older siblings have degrees already.

How are you feeling about starting university?

Feeling very excited, hoping to change and develop socially.  I'm really positive about my future.

What would be your advice to a young person starting college?

Pick the subjects you like and follow them through.

What will you miss about NewVIc?

My social life here and the food from the canteen.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

It was very hard at the start as I spoke very little English after fleeing Syria to Lebanon before London. I started to socialise more to practice the language and meet new people.

How are you going to celebrate?

I will be celebrating with my brother.

What have you got planned for the summer / rest of your holidays?

See the rest of my family and get ready for university.
