Jordan Andrew is studying for an Extended Diploma Art and Design (Level 3) and is in his second year.
Away from his studies he is a Gold Medallist for the Long Jump and 400 metres at the Special Olympics London Indoor Athletics Championships. He has now been elected to be part of the British Athletics Parallel Success Talent Pathway, for future international representation. He will also be participating on behalf of INAS (International Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disability) and will participate in the International Athletics competition 2018 and Paralympic Championships Tokyo 2020.
Sara Nowell, Art and Design Teacher said “Jordan is clearly a talented textile design student, who works exceptionally hard, often going above the expected requirements to ensure his level of perfection is executed in his work. Recently Jordan has been selected to take part in FAD’s (Fashion Awareness Direct) Fashion Futures 2017 and is refining his design skills to hopefully be selected and gain a place in the charities final competition. He is a diligent and committed young man who is growing in confidence both socially and academically. It is a pleasure to teach Jordan and I wish him continual success for his future which I have no doubt he will achieve.”
Beth Harris Sports Academy Manager, NewVIc said “We’re extremely proud of how Jordan has progressed in his athletics over the past couple of years, and his dedication is really paying off. It’s fantastic that he’s been identified to be part of the British Athletics Talent pathway and we’re really looking forward to seeing him compete at international level in the coming years!”
How would you describe yourself in three words?
I would describe myself as determined, motivated and well-mannered.
What drove you to pick your course/subject?
I chose this course due to my parents’ encouragement, they have always driven me to try out new things, they fill me up with confidence to always work hard, encourage me to never give up and inspire me to get better. Without their encouragement I would not have got this far in life, to do the things that other students are doing.
Have you tackled any hurdles, setbacks and overcame challenges that have affected what you want to do?
There were hurdles and challenges that I came across like, for example having trouble meeting deadlines, organising workload in sessions and managing my time constructively. When I reflect back to the previous years, having those difficulties has increased my confidence by learning from my mistakes to be able to conquer my weaknesses and problems successfully.
What made you choose NewVIc?
Before I started NewVIc they were putting on Art & Design taster days for students to get an idea of what the course is like. After I got to know about the art & design course I decided to do their vocational courses because they offered many opportunities that I can pursue, plus there were certain aspects of the course that appealed to me too.
What are your dreams and aspirations?
My dreams and aspirations are to become a professional artist/designer and an elite athlete.
What role has NewVIc played in your journey?
NewVIc has definitely transformed me to be a more confident, skillful, mature adult.
How have your teachers and tutors supported you in your studies and aspirations?
The teachers have always been supportive throughout my studies. If and when I was going through struggles they would always be there to help me to accomplish my goals and targets to make me a successful student.
Having achieved two gold medals in long jump and 400 metres at Special Olympics London Indoor Athletics Championships, could you tell me a little bit about how you got involved in athletics?
Well, at the start of secondary school I was taking part in Pentathlon challenge competitions representing my borough Newham. I took part in 4 different events which were poly bat, long jump, javelin and sprinting. I kept on winning all of my events. Each year I got better and better to the point I wanted to put myself forward to do athletics with Newham Essex Beagles so I could grow my talent.
When did you know you had this talent?
By the time I started secondary school, I did not know how well I was progressing in my sport competitions because I didn't have a particular sport that I liked, so I kept on trying other sport activities to get into the practice of it, until one day I found a sport that interested me. As years went by I started to progress, I started training myself and attending athletics sessions on a regular basis and that's how I found my passion for sport.
Have you used any of the services here i.e., counselling, skills centre, welfare support, enrichment, sports academy, leadership academy etc?
I have used the skills centre to give me additional support with my maths and English to help me achieve the grades I needed. Counselling helped me to overcome obstacles that I found challenging and going to NewVIc’s Graphic Design art enrichment programme has furthered my creativity to another level and I have now displayed my artwork in different exhibitions.
In order to secure selection for future international athletics competitions, can you tell me how often you train?
I do Athletics training on Mondays and also Hockey training on Fridays as well. I like to have a balance between different sports because they both improve your speed, endurance, physical strength and power, agility, capacity and flexibility. I make sure that when it comes to any occurring athletics competitions, I get plenty of practice and training so I am fully prepared to reach my full potential.
What is your advice for students who are considering coming to NewVIc?
All I can say is don't let anything stop you from what you want to do, never give up, have lots of fun, take risks in trying out new experiences, be confident about yourself and always put in as much effort as you can into all your studies.
So what's next for you when you leave NewVIc?
The next step for me is to get the best grades in my exams and to make more future successes.
