We believe in ambition, challenge and equality and our support services are designed to give you the tailored support you need to flourish.

We will support you to develop a strong sense of social and moral responsibility through the exploration of British values: democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance.

These values underpin our college life and are promoted through the tutorial programme, the curriculum, and our enrichment activities.

Supporting studentsBecome a skilled learner

The college’s skilled learner framework helps you plan the development of your learning skills. It encourages qualities that support success and achievement such as being dedicated, organised, enquiring and social. You will be supported in building your confidence, teamwork, communication and leadership skills.

Financial support

To help with the costs of college you can apply for financial support. Priority is given to young people in care, care leavers, young people on income support and disabled young people receiving employment support allowance or disability allowance. Free meals are provided to students that meet eligibility criteria and provide evidence of household income.

Academic tutors

Every student is allocated an academic tutor who will meet with you weekly to provide guidance and support. The tutor will help you set targets and to keep on track to achieve them. Careers and higher education will also be covered - tutors will assist you to apply for university, further training, and jobs. They will also provide your reference.

Safeguarding support

NewVIc is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our students. All students should be kept safe from harm, including any form of abuse, sexual exploitation or radicalisation. We protect our students from extremists who advocate violence, religious hatred, or racist, sexist or homophobic views. Our safeguarding and welfare advisers also help with:

  • housing/homelessness
  • finance and benefits
  • immigration issues
  • health matters

If there is something an adviser cannot help you with, they will refer you to an external agency to get the practical support you need.

Emotional support

We offer a counselling service for students who have problems or feelings that they find hard to cope with or want to understand better. We provide a safe and confidential space where a qualified counsellor will listen to you without making judgements. This kind of support can really make a difference towards ensuring students stay on track with their studies.

Inclusive learning support

Achievement rates show that our inclusive learning support has had a major impact on student achievement at NewVIc. Our accessible learning environment enables all students to be included in college life. We welcome students with learning difficulties and disabilities. When you apply to the college, it is important that you let us know about your specific learning and medical needs, including any access arrangements for examinations - we assess students and provide reports to the examination boards.

Supporting you to apply to university

You will be supported in writing your personal statement and choosing the right universities to maximise your offer chances. Support is provided by your personal tutor, careers team and Higher Education advisers from when you start college right up to the point that you take your place at university.

LGBTQ+ support

At NewVIc we work hard to ensure that the college is a safe space for LGBTQ+ people to study and work. We have a weekly support group for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) students and their straight allies. This group provides a supportive and safe environment, promotes LGBTQ+ awareness through events and helps the college community to be a safe place for all students regardless of their sexual orientation.

Supporting you to apply for work and apprenticeships

Our careers advisers will help you research employment and apprenticeship opportunities. They will support you to make informed decisions and to develop your employability skills including CV writing, completing application forms and interview techniques. You can book a session to see an adviser or drop in any lunchtime. The careers team offer employability workshops and talks from employers that will help you in your career progression.

Everything is in place at NewVIc to help you achieve your career goals. Excellent teaching and individual support combines with enrichment activities that develop the skills most in demand by universities and employers.
