3 X SILVER National Teaching Award WINNERS

Selected from thousands of nominations, NewVIc has been honoured three times as one of the National Teaching Silver Award winners across the country for our outstanding commitment to changing the lives of the students we work with every day.

FE Team of the Year: Performing Arts Team

Creativity should be at the heart of vibrant college and the Performing Arts team has an illustrious track record spanning 25 years on this site. Highly regarded in East London for its inclusivity and diversity, NewVIc excels at giving all students passionate about the arts the skills aspiration and opportunities to be highly successful as actors, musicians, dancers, choreographers and creative business people.

NewVIc has long standing partnerships with arts organisations, theatres such as Donmar Warehouse, Stratford Circus, and professional training institutions such as UAL, UEL and The Place.

The team’s success can be seen through both their students' work and the extensive network of performing arts and music alumni, who embody the rich variety of jobs that make up the Creative Industries. The college’s state of the art studio theatre enables students to perform, design and manage cutting edge performance; this years’ devised work from vocational students was in the opening night of the prestigious National Student Drama Festival.

In recent years alumni have gone on to become professional musicians, actors and dancers, as well as choreographers, music producers, costume designers and more.

FE Team of the Year: The Sports Academy

The NewVIc Sports Academy brings together research and strategy insight from across the sector to have a positive impact upon the health, wellbeing and academic success of our students. They aim to enhance the quality and level of sporting achievement of all individuals and teams from recreational to elite level, and encourage and support students wanting to play, coach, lead and officiate sport.

The Sports Academy provides opportunities for every student to access extracurricular sport and work with curriculum departments across the college to educate and engage the students in relevant and interesting physical activity. In addition to this, they also provide four intensive elite programmes for talented sportspeople.  Alongside a full-time curriculum programme, members of the Elite Sports Academies receive professional training and coaching, the opportunity to compete in college-level sports, and chance to apply for university sports scholarships.

The team was nominated as they play an integral part in recruiting new students, with nearly 300 students in 2018/19 identifying the college’s sports provision as being influential in their decision to apply. The team has seen numerous successes in regional and national competitions, has contributed significantly to students’ positive mental health, and works with external partners and employers to provide clear pathways for life after college.
