Why study Foundation Learning at NewVIc?

Integrated and inclusive

Foundation Learning students are included in all aspects of College life. We have a wide range of inclusive sport and enrichment activities where Foundation Learning students can develop and maintain friendships with students from across the College.

Specialist teachers and practitioners

Foundation Learning is a team made up of specialist teachers with years of experience working with and supporting young adults in education. Our Inclusive Learning team will also support you with your individual learning needs.  Classes are small and are supported by specialist learning support practitioners who provide group support in lessons and at break. Where necessary they are also able to take care of any personal needs.

Tailored support and development

You will be supported by a tutor who will review and support your progress. Towards the end of your programme, your tutor will support and guide you to help you move onto your next step.  In addition to this, you will have the opportunity to take part in a range of development activities designed to advance your leadership, social, intellectual, enterprise and team working skills.

Preparation for adulthood

All Foundation Learning courses are designed to prepare students for adulthood.

Preparing for adulthood is a series of stages that all young people go through when they move on from being a teenager to becoming an adult. It can be an exciting time of new opportunities, choices and increased independence. At NewVIc, students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities have tailored support, exciting experiences and are included in all aspects of College life.

We offer Level 1 and Entry Level courses for students who are working below grade 3 or have mild to moderate learning difficulties.

Our courses are centred around the following four key topics:

  • Employment is at the heart of Post 16 education and training and alongside vocational courses. We offer a range of work-based experiences and activities which are designed to develop employability skills and self-confidence.

  • Developing independence is an aim for everyone with SEND. Whether this includes learning to master and self-manage some everyday tasks such as practical living skills, learning to be an independent traveller, shopping, learning to be safe or preparing to progress to sheltered, supported or independent living. We provide students a range of experiences and opportunities, which include fully equipped training kitchens and situation rooms.

  • Foundation Learning students are included in all aspects of College life. We provide tailored and inclusive enrichment, sport and a wide range of opportunities which support students to develop and maintain friendships and feel safe and confident.

  • A wide range of support is available for young people to manage their own health. We also have a welfare suite for students with medical and personal care needs.
