16-19 Tuition Fund

The 16-19 fund is additional funding for the academic year 2022 to 2023 for schools, colleges and other 16 to 19 institutions to mitigate the disruption to learning due to COVID-19.

In accordance with the guidance, the College is prioritising the funding to support the following:

English and Maths

Small group tuition will be provided for students aged 16 to 19 who have not achieved a grade 4 or 5 in English and/or maths, are from an economically disadvantaged background and need catch- up support. These are defined as students from the 27% most economically deprived areas of the country based on the index of multiple deprivation.

Vocational Study Programmes and T Levels

The 16-19 Tuition Fund will be used to support eligible learners across our study programmes and T Level programmes. Depending on individual needs, learners may benefit from a range of activities comprising of:

  • Small group sessions focussed on developing missed specialist and technical knowledge

  • Small group practical sessions designed to develop and practice missed practical activities which could not be delivered remotely

  • Small group preparation and revision for vocational exams and assessments

Eligible students with SEND will also be supported in improving their vocational and academic skills.

Students aged 19+ who have an education, health and care plan (EHC) and who are also eligible for support subject to meeting the eligibility criteria for the fund will also be supported in improving their vocational and academic skills.

Mental Health and Well Being Support

It is recognised that the pandemic has negatively impacted Mental Health and Well Being, which is such an important part of being able to engage with study and thrive. As such the College is also expanding the range of mental health and wellbeing support available to students.

The funding will be used for timetabled small group sessions that are not included in the study programme planned hours and delivered during e.g. lunchtime and twilight as well as outside of the term time slots.

Delivery Model

The delivery will be resourced by using a mix of both internal teaching and learning support staff that have the appropriate knowledge, skills, and experience, and are engaged in continuous professional development. In addition to this, additional staff may be needed depending on capacity and skills required.

Each group will be timetabled and will not exceed 5 students. However, groups timetabled on Wednesday afternoons and lunchtimes may exceed 5 students due to limited availability of specialist staff.

Our Commitment

The College is committed to ensuring the tuition fund is used in accordance with the Government’s guidance on the 16 to 19 Tuition Fund by:

  • Producing this statement setting out how the fund will be used to support the most disadvantaged students

  • Publishing this guidance on the College website (https://www.newvic.ac.uk/1619-tuition-fund)

  • Recording the use of the fund, including references to individual students who receive support, the needs of those students, the number of hours of tuition delivered and retain the evidence of the tuition provided

  • Deliver the extra tuition and spend the allocated funds in the academic year 2022/23.
