A Level student tackles ocean health and scoops second place in national competition
Last term, UCL Ocean Health Challenge invited students across the UK to put their problem-solving skills and scientific knowledge to the test and design a practical solution to a real-world issue: How can we prevent plastic waste from reaching the sea?
With over 3,000 students taking part in the Challenge, we are proud that Youssef, an A Level (Biology, Chemistry and Maths) at NewVIc Sixth Form Centre, part of Newham College London, scooped the runner up spot in the Key Stage 5 category!
Competition organisers praised him for designing a microplastic water filter ‘with a great prototype’ which utilised 3D printing.
Youssef said, “My teacher encouraged us to get involved in the Challenge and we brainstormed ideas as a group. When I explored the issued further, I knew I wanted to avoid a cliched solution and try. I was aware that microplastics are a huge issue, so that was my starting point. I designed and built a micro plastic filter that’s easy to fix and changes colour when it becomes clogged.”
“I really enjoyed taking part – it feels good! And I learnt a lot; including teamwork, communication and how to think through limitations. Persistence is key!”
Inspirational work Youssef!
