NewVIc students plant tree to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III

A new garden set up for Foundation Learning students to grow, learn and celebrate the royal coronation.

On the 6th of May 2023, Charles III was crowned as King. The coronation of the King was marked with events across the country. NewVIc Foundation Learning students had been very busy in the build-up, creating a royal display, clearing the new garden and planting a tree after the royal coronation took place.

Last week, students were joined by Principal Mandeep Gill to plant a cherry tree in commemoration of the royal coronation. For the students, the tree planting ceremony also celebrates the growth of students’ skills in sowing, growing and using fruits and vegetables from the garden in their everyday learning in the future. Students also used the week to learn about the monarchy, the coronation and what this means for the country.

Annabelle Herring, Foundation Learning Manager at NewVIc added:

“Gardening is an important part of the Foundation Learning programme at NewVIc. It's a great way to help our students build their independent living and employability skills. Our Foundation Learners are lucky enough to have access to their very own allotment on site, where they plant their own flowers and vegetables.

Not only are our students planting the cherry tree to mark the coronation of King Charles III, we hope that the fruit it will produce will be used by our students in their everyday cookery lessons.”

Mandeep Gill, Principal at NewVIc added:

“It is really wonderful to see all the activities that have taken place by our Foundation Learning students to mark this momentous occasion. From learning about the coronation to creating a fantastic display. All the students who got involved in coronation festivities thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

It was great to witness such a landmark event in history and being part of this time in our own special way at NewVIc is a memory we hope our college students and communities will cherish for years to come.”

At NewVIc, Foundation Learning students are included in all aspects of college life. They have a wide range of inclusive sport and enrichment activities where Foundation Learning students can develop and maintain friendships with students from across the college.
