Danny
Danny is in the second year of his Preparation for Adulthood course (part of the Foundation Learning programme) and a former Stratford Academy student. He is thriving on the programme, taking advantage of the on site sensory garden, developing gardening skills as well as life skills through access to using the kitchen and a purpose built flat - some of the many opportunities available to foundation level students at NewVIc.
We caught up with Danny to find out about his journey at NewVIc.
What made you choose NewVIc?
Before I joined this course, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do or where I was heading. I knew I needed support with some basic skills, and I wanted a fresh start in a new environment. Having my sister study here helped me to decide to study here too!
The Foundation Learning programme gave me the chance to develop while also gaining skills in need to become independent. It’s not just about learning at NewVIc; it’s about building confidence, learning life skills, figuring out what’s next and having fun at the same time.
How have you found FOUNDATION LEARNING so far?
I used to feel really nervous speaking in front of others, but my teachers have been supportive. I completed my first performance at a NewVIc Open Day in front of a big crowd! I am a keen singer and love Michael Jackson and the Bee Gees.
I’ve learnt it’s okay to ask for help as I am learning. The staff are friendly and always there for me if I’m stuck or unsure about anything.
Learning is really fun. I’ve worked at Newham Hospital doing some gardening and litter picking with my peers. I love planting and growing things; I find it calming and relaxing. I’ve sold plants to students and staff around the sixth form, as part of our business enterprise project. The money we raised will be spent on future trips, which I am looking forward too.
I’ve used my cookery skills to create a brunch for staff. We used lots of different ingredients and cooked in front of our guests and served them. I practiced at home too to get it perfect, my teacher was really impressed and enjoyed the omelette I made for them.
WHO Is YOUR FAVOURITE TEACHER?
My favourite teacher is Saif - he teaches me maths. He’s kind and very patient with all of us. Anything that was hard to understand, he explained so I was able to understand it better. I really enjoy his lessons especially when we play Kahoot.
what would be your superpower and why?
To be able to fly so I can fly around the world and visit places and see more countries I have not been to yet!
Tell us about BEING ACTIVE WITH SPORTS AND BEING A PART OF THE SEND FOOTBALL TEAM?
I love footabll so I am involved in the SEND football team. I play regularly and recently played in the PAN disability football cup qualifer in Newham and we came second. I have also played in the SEND football festival held at NewVIc where we played against other colleges. My dream is to become a footballer and play for West Ham or Manchester City.
What is your advice for students considering coming to NewVIc?
Studying at NewVIc was one of the best decisions I’ve made. If you’re thinking about Foundation Learning, just remember that it’s a great place to grow, explore, and prepare for your future too. There’s lots to get involved with and I love my friends and teachers here.
So what’s next?
To improve my maths and continue to grow and learn new things. My dream job is out there, so that’s what I’m aiming for.
