Maxine-Rose
Maxine-Rose is the newly elected Student Union President at NewVIc Sixth Form Centre. She’s in the second year of her A Levels, studying Biology, Psychology and English Language and plans to build a career in Psychiatry. She is actively involved in sixth form life, taking advantage of the many opportunities available to students at NewVIc.
This academic year (2025-26), Maxine-Rose is serving as NewVIc’s Student Union President and has also been involved in the Student Council. Prior to joining sixth form, she attended St Catherine’s School for Girls. We caught up with Maxine-Rose to find out about her journey.
What made you choose NewVIc?
When I finished my GCSEs at St Catherine’s School for Girls, I wasn’t planning to come to NewVIc. The idea of a sixth form college didn’t appeal to me - I didn’t think it would suit my learning style. However, I changed my mind when I visited an open day.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STUDY A LEVELS?
I chose A Levels because I’d like to pursue a career in psychiatry - I will have to do medicine, so taking A Levels will help me to pursue my career aspirations - it is one of my biggest passions. I really enjoy psychology and learning about the human mind.
How have you found SIXTH FORM so far?
I have found sixth form to be an insightful experience. I have learnt a lot about my character and I have really been able to exercise what it means to be a leader. I have also learnt more about the importance of effective communications with staff and students.
I enjoy the sixth form community as I am able to express myself in a way that I can help others, alongside helping myself. NewVIc is different from school. The teachers and staff can relate to you. The teachers are there for you - you can approach them for help when you need it.
Is there anything you wish you had known that you do now?
I wish I had known about being more vocal when it comes to taking opportunities as some truly are cherished moments meaning they won’t always be there.
Who is the most inspiring person you have ever met?
The most inspiring person I have ever met is definitely my mother. She guides me and is such a positive example. She encourages me in all my dreams and aspirations and when things get difficult she is always there for me to lean on.
I’ve seen her face challenges and bounce back even better than ever, therefore she assures me that nothing is too big or too small and with God you can achieve anything.
Tell us about being the Student Union President and a part of Student Council?
I want to be a voice for every student. One of my aims is to work with the senior leadership team to ensure student work and social spaces are as comfortable as possible.
Being part of the Student Council was an amazing opportunity that has really helped me learn what it means to be a representative of a larger group of people and communicate their views and expressions effectively.
Student voice is valued at NewVIc. I also appreciate the wide range of extracurricular activities available to students; from getting involved in the student union and volunteering to sports clubs.
What is your advice for students considering NewVIc?
Make sure you come with an open heart and an open mind. Try and participate in as many extracurricular activities as possible. Don’t hesitate to reach out to teachers or student union members as we are here to help everyone have a smooth and exciting journey. Key points:
• What you do today will have an impact on your future!
• Be open minded
• Ask questions - you can’t expect to know everything
• Find out about the resources available to you at sixth form or college and use them (whether that’s using the library, volunteering or joining clubs). You won’t be there forever.
• Enjoy your time!
So what’s next?
After NewVIc I intend to study medicine at the University of Manchester and specialise to become a psychiatrist.
I also intend to continue my current business of braiding hair while also serving in church and holding Christian events at university while also ensuring I am the best version of myself for those around me and my family.
Alongside serving in church in a choir - I run a Christian podcast with two of my church sisters which is a lot of fun and we hope to expand this with even more listeners.
