Muhammad

Meet Muhammad who is in his first year of Level 3 Applied Science and A Level Maths. He is actively involved in sixth form life, taking advantage of the many opportunities available to students at NewVIc Sixth Form Centre.

This academic year (2025-26), Muhammad joined the Marketing Ambassador Programme, Student Union and Friends of the Earth to get involved in the wider student community. Prior to joining sixth form, he attended The Palmer Catholic Academy. We caught up with Muhammad to find out about his journey.

What made you choose NewVIc?

I was recommended NewVIc by a private tutor who was tutoring me. After receiving my results, I attended enrolment without having previously visited the sixth form. I had heard many positive things about the sixth form which encouraged me to enrol. The enrolment process was excellent; I received a lot of guidance and support, and staff clearly explained the steps I needed to take. This put me at ease, especially as some of my grades were not strong. I was reassured and made to feel comfortable about the pathway I would follow to improve. I was given the opportunity to retake my GCSE English and Combined Science, which helped me significantly improve my grades and progress onto a Level 3 course.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STUDY Applied science and A LEVEL maths?

I felt that I had real options to succeed at NewVIc. Rather than turning me away, they supported me and gave me the opportunity to start at Level 2. Without the help and encouragement I would not have been able to progress as well as I have, and I would not now be studying on a Level 3 course.

How have you found SIXTH FORM so far?

I have found sixth form to be a very positive experience so far. The teachers are helpful and supportive. Each month, I complete assessments where my results are reviewed, allowing me to clearly identify my strengths as well as areas where I need to improve. This has helped me make consistent progress. I enjoy studying alongside my peers, as they are supportive, motivating, and create an environment where I can learn without feeling too much pressure. Both students and staff are always approachable, and support is available whenever I need it.

My favourite staff at NewVIc are the Marketing Team! They are a fantastic group of people who are welcoming, supportive, and fun. They have been especially helpful to me, as they are easy to talk to and encouraged me to get involved. Their motivation and support have inspired me to always try my best and push myself in everything I do.

Who is the most inspiring person you have ever met?

The most inspiring person to me is someone I have not met, but who has had a significant impact on my life: Barack Obama, the American politician who served as the 44th President of the United States. One of his most famous quotes, “Yes, we can learn. Yes, we can succeed. You decided you would not be defined by where you come from but where you want to go,” has motivated me greatly. This quote has supported me from the time I was studying for my GCSEs and continues to inspire me today, encouraging me to stay focused on my future and move forward with confidence.

Tell us about being a marketing ambassador and A Part of Student union?

Being part of the Student Marketing Ambassador Programme and the Student Union has been a great experience for me. I joined both programmes to build my confidence, improve my communication skills, and make new friends. During my GCSEs, I experienced significant mental health challenges, and although I have been receiving support, taking part in these programmes has played an important role in helping me manage and improve my wellbeing. There are many opportunities and support systems available for students; taking that first step and getting involved can make a real difference.

What is your advice for students considering NewVIc?

Don’t be shy or afraid, as this can hold you back from making progress. Motivate yourself to be confident and reach out to make new friends. Get involved in the activities available to you, meet new people, and enjoy yourself. Make positive decisions with the right people around you. Find your community and make the most of your sixth form experience.

So what’s next?

After NewVIc, I intend to pursue an apprenticeship with a law firm while working within the finance sector. As a backup plan, I aim to attend university to study law and finance.
